Facade sampling Central Cross, Cologne

Using a 1:1 scale mock-up, we worked with our clients Quantum Immobilien AG and PROXIMUS REAL ESTATE AG to sample the new facade of Central Cross and define the final color tone.

The technically complex double facade is an important part of the revitalization of the 12-storey office building from the 1960s. Located at a busy intersection in the heart of Cologne’s vibrant city center, demolition of the existing building initially seemed unavoidable. It no longer met today’s requirements in terms of comfort, energy efficiency and quality of stay. Instead, the bold decision was made to preserve and convert the building, which will save over 2,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

The new facade meets several requirements at the same time: It protects against the high noise emissions, significantly improves the lighting and ensures special user comfort with its individually opening windows. The vertically accentuated copper-colored pilaster strips and the scaled structure give the Central Cross a new appearance that makes it a contemporary urban building block.

First public presentation of the ‘House of Curiosity’

At an information event on 3 April, Dirk Lange, together with Mayoress Sibylle Keupen, Head of the Department of Culture Heinrich Brötz, Head of the City Planning Council Frauke Burgdorff, Director of the Adult Education Centre Dr. Beate Blüggel and the Director of the City Library Doris Reinwald, presented the conversion of the former Horten building into an open building for all citizens. In addition to the city library and adult education centre, the plan is to create open spaces for working and a restaurant with a view of the city centre.

The conversion includes the removal of the escalators. In their place, a spacious atrium will be created that extends through the entire building and is crossed several times by a new, freely designed staircase.

The interest in the information event was high, with around 150 visitors. The response in the subsequent question and answer session was extremely positive.

'Do we still need new buildings at all?' New Design Perspectives podcast episode with Jasna Moritz!

In the new podcast episode of the German Design Council, Jasna Moritz talks to Martin Pauli about the future of construction. They discuss why sustainable architecture is more than just reducing CO2 emissions and why a holistic approach is necessary.

The focus is particularly on circular construction. Instead of constantly building new, we need a more conscious approach to existing buildings, materials and resources. How can we design buildings that are flexible, can be dismantled and reused? What role do social and functional aspects play in this? And why are honesty and a dialogical planning process essential for sustainable solutions?

A multi-layered discussion about the challenges and opportunities of the building turnaround.

Feel free to listen! Now on Spotify or here under the link: https://www.german-design-council.de/themen/design-perspectives-podcast/folge-13

1st prize in the ‘New multifunctional and residential building on Aribonenstraße in Salzburg’ competition!

On the former site of the Schneiders company on the corner of Bessarabierstraße and Aribonenstraße in Salzburg, an ensemble of three buildings and the existing building, parts of which are worthy of preservation, is to be constructed. The new polygon-shaped buildings create a central green space that serves as a recreational area and allows for an easy division of the site. The clever staggering of heights achieves a harmonious connection between the northern and southern buildings. The existing building, as a resilient house, accommodates uses such as commercial, office, and community uses, and offers a special, loft-like form of living on the top floor. Developed as a green residential area, the new neighbourhood connects to the surrounding district via various pathways, creating meeting places and enabling the unpretentious integration of privately financed and subsidised housing.

The landscape design is informed by the architectural language and brings as much greenery as possible into the community, while promoting sustainability. Private gardens, community playgrounds and urban garden areas are integrated to enrich the residents’ living experience. These provide both private outdoor spaces and shared spaces that encourage interaction within the community. In addition to the play areas for the daycare centre and the neighbourhood children, meeting points and relaxation areas have been created for the community, supporting social interaction and strengthening the sense of belonging in the neighbourhood. Ecological considerations are at the heart of the design, with a clear focus on biodiversity and environmental health.

Many thanks to IPC Project Consulting and Rainer Schmidt for the good cooperation!

Planning application submitted for residential construction in Munich-Neufreimann

The new building with 101 apartments is part of the new Neufreimann district, which is currently being built on the site of the former Bayern barracks in Munich. To prevent the inner courtyard from overheating in summer, the structure is opened up at the north and south-western corners by means of generous joints. This division into three individual structures improves the natural air exchange, creates an optimized orientation for the residents and guarantees improved lighting in the living and recreation rooms. Between the volumes, terraces and a pergola access are created. On the ground floor, commercial and community areas enrich the residential use. The 7-8 storey complex will be built using a timber hybrid construction method and meets the “Quality Seal for Sustainable Buildings” (QNG).

We are looking forward to the subsequent detailed planning.

2nd prize in the ‘Eschweiler Sports Centre’ competition!

The flood disaster in the Ahr valley also caused severe devastation in Eschweiler, affecting the municipal sports centre. This is now to be replaced by a new building with a competition-standard indoor swimming pool and a multifunctional triple sports hall. The city attaches particular importance to durable materials, low life cycle costs and measures to adapt to climate change.
Our design is based on the objectives of preserving as many existing trees as possible, responding to the residential area to the south with the greatest possible distance and appropriate height, and minimising the carbon footprint. These premises give rise to a striking, flat structure with projections and recesses, from which the high volumes of the sports hall and the competition pool rise. The height differences are used for surrounding glazing that allows atmospheric light to enter the swimming and sports area, while also zoning the swimming hall.
The halls are embedded in a border of lower (ancillary) rooms. Between them lies the foyer as a central connecting element, from which visitors have a generous view of the sports facilities.

To minimise CO2 emissions, renewable and natural raw materials such as wood and clay are used, a circular construction method is employed and the basement is reduced to a minimum. The primary energy requirement is significantly lower than the 2016 Passive House standard for swimming pools thanks to an optimised building envelope and the reduction of pool water evaporation and thermal wastewater losses.

The design was developed in collaboration with TOHR Bauphysik, RMP Stephan Lenzen Landschaftsarchitekten, Inco Ingenieurbüro and kevee cologne. Many thanks for the great cooperation!

Congratulations to the 1st prize, which a+r Generalplaner, Faktorgrün Landschaftsarchitekten and CSZ Ingenieurconsult TA received.

A place that connects – competition for a residential complex on Agnesienberg

Our competition for the new quarter of Lebenshilfe Bad Kreuznach e.V. on Agnesienberg is based on an integrative concept that combines living, working and community.

The design is characterised by three two-storey polygonal structures, which look like boulders scattered across a meadow. The central element, a walking path, connects the buildings in the neighbourhood and zones the various uses of the green open spaces. Gardens, retreats and communal areas are created that promote interaction between residents and act as a social centre.

The wooden modular buildings blend harmoniously into the surrounding landscape with a simple and clear façade design. Horizontal and vertical battens give the buildings a sculpted and vibrant surface.

The sustainability concept includes the use of geothermal energy, electricity generation through PV, as well as a low degree of sealing and rainwater seepage.

Congratulations to the winners! @bhk.architekten

Keynote speech by Gerd Wittfeld at the Chamber of Architects NRW

Gerhard Wittfeld was invited by the UNESCO Chair of Cultural Heritage and the Chair of Urban Planning and Design at RWTH Aachen University to speak to 240 students and lecturers at the Chamber of Architects of North Rhine-Westphalia. His talk focused on two of our neighbourhood development projects that address the important issue of conversion and exemplify climate-friendly and socially responsible design and construction.

The first was the already completed residential project ‘Freiraum Maxglan’, built on the site of the former Struber barracks in Salzburg. The masterplan project, which emerged from a competition won in 2010, comprises 356 subsidised rental, buy-to-let and owner-occupied apartments, a kindergarten and a district park.

There was also an insight into the mixed-use Neuland Neuss neighbourhood, which is currently being planned on the site of a former industrial screw factory. In addition to around 450 apartments of various sizes, catering for different lifestyles and all generations, the car-free neighbourhood will include a wide range of public and community facilities – from retail, restaurants and hotels to day-care centres, large nurseries and community centres, small businesses and co-working, as well as mobility stations, bicycle workshops and a neighbourhood garage. The neighbourhood meets high sustainability standards and has been designated a ‘KlimaQuartier.NRW’ by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

shaping the future - merry christmas and a happy new year 2025

this year’s new year’s card also comes without sleds, snow and reindeer, but instead with a building material. is that appropriate? we think so. as architects, we constantly have to think about the materials we use. even if public debate is currently dominated by other issues, climate change is still the biggest problem of our time. that is why we are showing you a stone from the french atlantic coast this year.

stone is one of the oldest building materials. it is durable, resilient and individual: different treatments create a variety of surfaces. there are stones almost everywhere. they shape landscapes and buildings. think of the greek temples, the roman aqueducts or the magnificent onyx walls in the pavilion of our aachen colleague mies van der rohe in barcelona. and every stone tells a different story – the story of its origin, for example, and the history of the place where it occurs. however, a stone should be left at the place where it occurs, that’s where it belongs. you should also avoid long transport routes. and if you take stones out of nature, you should reuse them for as long as possible.

following these instructions for use, you can now reverently shiver with the season: stones are simply beautiful, sometimes almost magical. each one is a unique specimen. the colors, hardnesses and patterns of stones are so diverse that you would love to build only with stones, if only – see above, you shouldn’t . we can, however, refurbish old, used stones and put them to new use: reduce, reuse, recycle! by the way, on the atlantic coast it is forbidden to simply take stones with you, no matter how handy they are. so instead, enjoy this card, which you can’t throw that well, but you can send and hang it very comfortably.
for the new year, we hope you manage to get under someone’s skin and get as many stones rolling as possible.

„nachlebig, zeitgeschnitten, kreislaufbar“

was the title of Kilian Kada’s presentation at the International Architecture Forum 2024 in Hamburg on 23 November 2024 on the topic of forward-looking architecture with a focus on sustainability and innovation.

He showed how circular construction and the intelligent use of existing buildings are driving the building revolution and called for existing buildings to be seen as valuable assets. Using the firm’s own projects as examples, he showed how climate protection, economic efficiency and architectural quality can go hand in hand.

BDA Partner Day in our office!

We were delighted to host this year’s BDA Partner Day on the topic of ‘Right to Repair’ in our Aachen office.

How do the right to repair and the revisability of technical building equipment affect architecture and building products?

This was the key question we explored during the event. The event started with an exciting contribution from Jens Schumacher, part of the EU Commission, followed by a critical impulse from Annabelle von Reutern, TOMAS Transformation of Material and Space, and a contribution from Nathalie Hans, kadawittfeldarchitektur.

Many thanks to all participants for the lively discussions and exciting perspectives!

Jasna Moritz at this year's Forum:Bau

What culture do we need to achieve sustainable construction? Jasna Moritz will be exploring this question at this year’s Forum:Bau on 27 November in the Great Hall of the Zeche Zollverein or online.

One of her central theses: Sustainable construction is complex. It requires expanded expertise and qualified decision-making aids – but also dialogue, rethinking and digitalisation as key drivers of the construction industry’s turnaround.
