#Thinktank with workshop character #Developed in a participatory way from within #Showcase for the city

Developed with the involvement of users, the adaptable working world features an array of different spaces to create an environment that fosters creative interaction and collaboration between start-ups, the university, and business. The barrier-free building serves the main user GATEWAY (the University of Cologne’s Excellence Start-up Center) as well as students who have founded companies and service providers who support start-ups – not just as a place to work and try things out, but also as a space for recreation, events, and new experiences.

The new Innovation and Start-up Centre IGZ was developed on the university grounds at Weyertal in Cologne by the end of 2023. Designed as a five‑storey solitaire, the building responds to the heterogeneous urban fabric of the built environment. The angular volume adopts the heights of the surrounding structures and reacts to the neighbouring buildings with large window openings, entrances, recessed and projecting elements.

The concept of the work space in the interior was developed in workshops together with student founders involved in start-ups and the main user Gateway.

Alongside the main entrance area with the reception, the ground floor accommodates a cafeteria and two different sized meeting rooms, which can be connected to form a single large auditorium or exhibition area. The open-plan work landscape and private offices on the upper levels create a flexible environment for the development and realisation of innovative ideas. Roof terraces and exterior space offer opportunities to communicate and work outdoors. The varied space is complemented by two double-level lounge areas – the so-called LIKE Its*. They provide a pleasant atmosphere to not only relax with coffee and snacks but also to work, meet and present ideas in a more informal setting.

These open spaces at ground floor level and above the main entrance appear like large display windows in the facade with its vertical aluminium strip cladding.

“The building’s open, inspiring, and relaxed atmosphere is fertile ground on which innovative ideas can flourish. And that was palpable from the moment the first tenants moved in.”

A standalone in the urban fabric, the five-story office build with its entrances, projecting sections, and recesses references its immediate neighborhood in all manner of ways and matches the heights of the adjacent buildings. The architecture takes its cue from a wish right from the start that the building would not be merely a conventional office block, but a thinktank with the feel of an industrial workshop, all in line with the motto of “keep it simple”.

With its floor-to-ceiling glazing, pilaster strips, and perforated sheet aluminum, the building visualizes from afar that creativity and visions meld here to generate hands-on productivity.

Model studies

Various studies on the volume, shape, and outer skin were undertaken on the basis of sketches and models of various scales in order to explore how best to embed the new build in the setting. Recesses and projecting elements in the building’s volume reference the lines of vision, heights, and scales of the neighboring structures. The building’s polygonal shape respects distances and the flow within it, making access readily legible from the outside. A small, protected plaza emerges behind the InnoDom, while the staggered setbacks create three roof terraces that can be used in a variety of ways.

“The InnoDom Cologne displays its special function as a thinktank from afar. Like a symbol, the crystalline building with its self-confident color stands out in its setting and kindles curiosity as to the innovative work going on inside it.”

One special aspect of the build are the two specially staged double-story spaces that boast panoramic glazing – the twin LIKE ITs. They are destined for communal use and with their bright and inviting monochrome colors communicate the unconventional start-up flair of the thinktank to the outside world of Cologne.

The overall volume houses two striking spaces, each with its own unique atmosphere. They function as display windows open to the city, and offer users added value as the ideal place for:

Lounging about
Inspiration
Kicking off communication
Experiencing new things
Informing
Touching base

= LIKE IT

LIKE IT

The InnoDom Cologne’s LIKE ITs really make the building stand out. They show this both outwardly and inwardly – with their confident monochrome colors. To the outside, the two-story staged spaces with their panoramic glazing are like stage sets, acting as beacons visible from afar. With confidence and appeal, they communicate the thinktank’s unconventional and diverse usages to urban Cologne 24/7 – and are especially effective at night. Inside, meanwhile, the special LIKE IT spaces encourage users to lounge about, inspire, kick-start communication, experience new things, inform themselves, and touch base (acronym: LIKE IT).

“In a two-stage workshop, the building was designed from the inside out together with its users.”

Daniel Trappen, Head of Interior Design, Associate Partner

At an early stage in planning, spatial requirements and functional sequences were defined in workshops with various start-ups and staff at Gateway ESC, the University of Cologne’s start-up service. This then served as the basis for further planning.

LIKE IT 1 is located on the third and fourth floors, meaning its special purpose can be seen from far away: The semitransparent layer of colored expanded metal vividly highlights the raft of different uses round the clock. LIKE IT 1 offers everything, with a broad range of different functions: from staggered seats for meetings and a bench at the panoramic window to a climbing/hanging wall where users can get physically active. There’s also a screen for gaming or watching sports coverage.

LIKE IT 2 interacts with the city at street level. The inviting, two-story space is defined by a large flight of staggered seats that offer a magnificent view out. From the outside, the gleaming yellow space immediately catches the eye and ensures the start-ups have a strong presence in the vicinity.

LIKE IT 2 can be used in any number of different ways, be it to grab a quick coffee with colleagues or for informal lectures or joint events. The light cladding in colored expanded metal preserves a view through to the entrance area on the one side and the café zone on the other. Movable tables and chairs deliver great flexibility, and there’s a table football set beneath the stairs as well as another comfy seating corner for those who want to be less active.

The InnoDom’s identity is defined by its bright, friendly sequences of spaces that offer users a huge range of potential functions. On the upper floors open office areas wrap around the access core that runs up through all the levels; the spaces allow for both concentrated and inventive work but also teamwork and informal meetings. The InnoDom’s world of work provides all manner of options for New Work, from permanent workstations in the form of single desks surrounded by 3D acoustic screens or double clusters, through to teamwork spaces with bench layouts, or even the touchdown zones that can be configured at will.

The spectrum of open spaces is supplemented by closed offices where people can chisel away at innovative ideas in different configurations and in a different atmosphere.

Each floor boasts its own coffee point. These are, wherever possible, located close to the large teamwork and touchdown zones and right next to the three terraces.

Everyday work in the InnoDom skillfully incorporates the outdoor space into the entire course of the day. Supplementing and in contrast to the indoor workstations, the InnoDom features a total of three terraces spread across two levels. All three differ in terms of shape and positioning and the resulting usage concept. Users thus always have the opportunity to include time away from their desk in their workflow.

With its alignment and fit-out, the “Early Bird” terrace on the InnoDom’s 4th floor is the ideal spot for a lively start to the day. The soft tartan floor covering is ideal for an early yoga session, and users can prepare their breakfast afterwards at the sturdy outdoor bar. Comfy seating rounds out this great place for a shared start to the day.

„At the workshops, the start-ups and we as the staff of the Start-up Center expressed the wish that we would like to have space for movement before, during and after work, to clear our minds to boost our creativity. We are really bowled over by the solutions realized in the form of the terrace and LIKE-IT.“

Andreas Klein, Gateway Exzellenz, Start-up Center

On the 3rd floor, the “Green Thumb” terrace provides perfect conditions for urban gardening. Here, users can plant vegetables and herbs in the raised beds and planters and enjoy lunch in the spaces between the vegetable patches.

The “Sundowner” terrace on the 4th floor is defined by a large pergola that provides shade from the sun and is also predestined for mood lighting, as well as a large permanently installed communal high table. An open, sturdy bar top provides an opportunity for catering and BBQs. The light, stackable furniture in the remaining areas makes for swift reconfigurations depending on what users want and need.

The roof areas that are not used for terraces or to house facilities technology have largely been greened.

SUSTAINABILITY, A KEY ASPECT

Photo: Jens Kirchner

As a curtain façade, it can be taken down and the materials separated and in part recycled. Consciously, no composite materials were used.

The InnoDom has been designed for optimally reduced energy consumption and realized accordingly. Special attention was paid to a high-grade façade, energy-efficient technology with a heat-recovery system, and an outer skin with low thermal bridging. As a result, the primary energy requirement is only about half of the figure required for it to receive energy performance certification.

Energy is deliberately obtained from future-oriented sources: The InnoDom is hooked up to the remote heating/cooling network which, like the electricity, is supplied by mf-Energie GmbH using the university teaching hospital grid.

Photo: Jens Kirchner

Base-load cooling on the ground floor is delivered by underfloor cooling. Additional cooling elements in the form of ceiling-mounted radiant cooling profiles cover peak loads and allow for personal settings. Alongside their technical function, the design of the profiles underscores the building’s industrial feel. The ground floor is heated by under-floor heating. On the upper floors, basic cooling load is delivered by means of conditioning of the concrete core temperature. The office zones are heated the same way and by ceiling-mounted heating panels beneath the bare ceilings and located along the façade of the individual stories.

Much attention was paid to sustainability in the choice of materials; for example, Troldtekt cement-bonded wood wool panels were used for the core (C2C and GSBC certified ), NoraPlan rubber was used on the upper floors (GSBC, Blauer Engel), Ligno wood acoustic cladding for the homebases (natureplus certification), not to mention recyclable outdoor furniture from Fermob. The office fit-out largely relies on steel, wood, linoleum, and fabrics, and can by and large be recycled or possesses a high proportion of recycled materials (e.g., PET felt).

InnoDom receives German "LICHTDESIGN-PREIS"

InnoDom receives German “LICHTDESIGN-PREIS” 2024 in the office/administration category!

The lighting design of the Cologne University Foundation’s start-up center was created by arens faulhaber lichtplaner, architecture and interior design by kadawittfeldarchitektur. The prize was awarded on June 6 at the Dornier Museum in Friedrichshafen.

The “InnoDom” start-up center communicates its unconventional and diverse use visibly from afar in Cologne’s urban space, especially in the dark. Two two-storey, staged, monochrome rooms with panoramic glazing resemble stage sets and, like shop windows, show the work and tinkering going on inside.

In the interior spaces, the technology is routed openly beneath the concrete ceilings, with guidelines as the guiding theme of the lighting design. On the first floor, these show the way from the lobby to the cafeteria and the meeting rooms. In this way, they also contribute to making the open room sequences tangible as a continuum. On the upper floors, they are supplemented by desk-mounted task lights. Users can control these individually, while at the same time supporting the concept of an open, flexible working environment.
