Brief New construction and redesign of the forecourt on the east side of Münster’s main railway station | Added Value The new entrance to the station at Bremerplatz creates a link between the districts on both sides of the railway tracks and thus provides an important impetus for the development of the Hansa district, the harbor district and the old town.

Hauptbahnhof Münster Eastside, Münster | Germany As part of the modernization measures, an attractive face to the Hansaviertel is being created on the east side with the new station entrance. The new development – consisting of a glazed first floor zone, a green, sharp-edged roof and three buildings resting on it – will spatially complete and define the previously undifferentiated urban space on Bremer Platz. With a slight curve, the roof responds to the curved edge of the square opposite. It covers the generous first floor area, in which two spacious entrances lead the public space deep into the building and from there provide access to the platforms. The access roads to the three-storey cycle station and public underground parking garage are also located here, as well as areas for various stores, a supermarket and the railroad’s recycling center. On the roof area, surrounded by green areas, are three independent structures housing apartments and a hotel.

The new building is divided vertically into three main sections: The elevated first floor takes on all the necessary railroad and urban functions (access to the platforms, recycling center, technical areas, stops for long-distance coaches, cars, access to the bicycle station, etc.) and also offers additional space for conveniently located commercial rental areas. The second main section above consists of a generous roof area, the Rooftop Garden, which emphasizes the systematic separation of first floor and upper floor uses. The third component consists of three polygonal structures with apartments and a hotel, which are raised out of the urban space above the Rooftop Garden.

Organized space situation

The roof responds to the park with a slight curve and completes the existing buildings that run in an arc.

With the new station center at Bremer Platz, we are creating a link between the districts on both sides of the railway tracks and providing an important impetus for the development of the Hansa district, the harbor district and the old town.

The new building ensemble creates an independent and spacious entrance situation at the rear of the main station, which has been neglected in terms of urban development and quality to date – not only for Deutsche Bahn, but also for all other functions.

Passage

The new construction will preserve and upgrade the track access points.

The partially accessible roof lifts the apartments out of the urban space and creates green inner courtyards above the station entrances, with exclusive access for the residents and users of the adjacent buildings.

Together with the new building, a public bicycle parking garage was created, in which around 2150 bicycles can now be parked safely. It presents itself brightly and clearly via a transparent façade to the forecourt and develops along a spacious ramp system over three floors.
