# Extension of an existing dressage stadium with a grandstand (capacity 1200 seats) and other functional rooms

The spectator terrace, open staircase and protruding roof complete the “missing link” of the existing u-shaped stadium and focus attention on the action in the dressage arena.

On the premises of the CHIO – Aachen Laurensberg Racing Association in Sportpark Soers, the existing equestrian sports will be enhanced by a new grandstand. The new grandstand complements the existing dressage stadium and closes up the fourth and still-undeveloped east edge. The design is divided into two functional elements: the body of the spectator stand, large staircase and projecting roof, and the underlying functional rooms. The spectator stand on the upper level is accessed by a grand staircase, and provides space for 1200 spectators. The up to 16 meters high and 18 meters wide projecting roof and glass façade to each side protect the visitors from the elements. On the ground floor beneath the grandstand are the services – sanitary facilities, storage, and mechanical and electrical systems, as well as rooms for temporary use (the registration office, the tournament director’s office and a meeting room).

The main actor of the extension is the new grandstand. In order to highlight this creative approach, all surfaces of the spectator stand, staircase and protruding roof are kept in a uniform white tone. As a result, the grandstand clearly stands out as a separate structure.

The grandstand's steel construction has been completed!

The steel construction of the grandstand is standing!

The spectator grandstand has been designed as a reinforced concrete stepped construction with a projecting steel roof construction. The load-bearing elements of the roof structure include a framework of welded steel sections which is clad with trapezoidal metal sheeting providing bracing and covering. The steel structure is supported by a reinforced concrete ring beam at the rear of the stepped concrete platform. The remaining roof load is transmitted to the ground floor and from there to the reinforced concrete columns to the foundations via only four slender steel posts at the front of the grandstand.

In addition to the traditional entrances at the back, a wide open stairway leads up to the stands.

The functional rooms below the grandstand are clad with a facade of aluminium cassettes, which are coated with a high-quality anthracite-coloured finish.

Hats off ...in the dressage arena!

After missing out on the high society’s wide-brim hats at the last CHIO… the RWTH Aachen has celebrated its graduation in front of the magnificent backdrop of the arena’s extension.

Hello, anybody here?

The area is deserted almost throughout the year.
It comes alive a few days before the CHIO.

Construction work started in July 2013. The new east stand of the Deutsche Bank Stadium was completed – just in time – for the CHIO 2014.
