Brief Interior design for a bistro | Added value The bistro offers a variety of options for different uses in a small space, going beyond the usual range of services.

The Urstein, Wissenspark Salzburg-Urstein | Austria The Wissenspark Salzburg-Urstein is home to the ‘Das Urstein’, a relaxed, stylish, public bistro with a wide range of options for different needs. Developed for the Hilfswerk Salzburg and attached to its regional office, it offers a healthy breakfast and lunch, a space for productive work and for recharging one’s batteries, as well as for informal meetings and events. It is open to employees of the Hilfswerk and to everyone working in the knowledge park, as well as to visitors.

ZONING

Entrance. Visitors are greeted by a ‘plant aquarium’ at the entrance. It introduces the calm, relaxed atmosphere of the bistro, acts as a visual and acoustic filter and is a defining element in the entire room.

Zoning in a variety of spatial qualities

The interior design follows a multifunctional approach and creates a variety of qualities in the approx. 200 m² dining area – from cosy, intimate retreats to communicative, open areas for informal exchanges or events. The subtle zoning is achieved by mirrored ceiling sails above room-forming furniture with the same rounded design language. The sails expand the space and reflect the users and their activities, creating a constant stream of new visual impressions. At the same time, the sails with their micro-perforated surface and the insulation behind them serve as acoustic panels.

Event space: A long, raised table is the communicative meeting point for larger groups, but also for individuals or smaller groups. It is located opposite the bar and is visually shielded from the entrance area.

Urban: A large, inviting seating area with individual tables and flexible seating options creates a cosy atmosphere for face-to-face situations in the area that is generously glazed towards the plaza. The visual relationship between the exterior and interior characterises the atmosphere.

Uniform spatial envelope

The different areas of use are brought together into a harmonious overall picture by means of a uniform design, colour and material concept. A haptic, green band of structured, coloured wood-wool panels envelops the interior and merges with the green inner courtyard. It also ensures acoustic comfort.

Cosy. At the back of the bistro, semi-circular seating areas provide a quiet retreat with an intimate atmosphere and a view of the green inner courtyard.

COLOUR AND MATERIAL CONCEPT

rough + comfy

The green inner courtyard is the source of inspiration and starting point for the colour and material concept: a green, structured band spans the guest area from there to the ‘plaza’ and, together with the furniture in earthy dark and green tones and natural materials such as wood and leather, shapes the basic mood. Marble composite surfaces, brass elements and the reflective ceiling sails create elegant highlights. The interplay of these elements creates a visually and emotionally inviting space. The blackened, open soffit with visible cabling, the wood-wool panels of the green band and the light-coloured screed create an urban contrast. This combination of roughness and natural warmth and cosiness defines the characteristic atmosphere of the bistro. The interplay of opposites is also supported by the contrast between smooth, reflective surfaces and the matt texture of the walls – rough and smooth, matt and shiny, colourful and achromatic. The indoor and outdoor plants also fit into this canon. A stylishly relaxed character emerges, with which the bistro manages the balancing act between a cosy retreat and dynamic hospitality.
