BRIEF Residential building with 87 units in Aachen city centre | ADDED VALUE Seven separate houses, each with an individual character, have been created by carefully breaking down the large development scheme into smaller parts.
AACHENMITTEMITTE, AACHEN | GERMANY The residential building, in a prime location only a few minutes from the city centre, is a U-shaped perimeter development bordering the three streets Im Mariental, An den Frauenbrüdern and Kasernenstraße. 37 owner-occupied and 50 rented apartments are arranged around a communal garden in the centre of the residential block. The residents-only courtyard with access from the street An den Frauenbrüdern is a quiet place to retreat to from the hustle and bustle of Aachen’s city centre. In addition to the communal outdoor space, each apartment has its own private balcony or loggia. Full-height floor-to-ceiling windows ensure that the interior is flooded with natural light.
In order to incorporate the large volume into the naturally evolved urban environment and enable residents to identify with their home, the development has been divided into separate more suitable sized houses by creating clearly visible vertical joints. The individual character of the houses is further enhanced by finishing the clinker facades in one out of four different anthracite colour tones. A few selected facade areas, such as the entrances or loggias of the street-facing apartments, are accentuated by a relief pattern in the clinker brickwork.
