Did you know, that the façade of the scientific-medical institute building NAWI-MEDI of the GERMAN SPORT UNIVERSITY COLOGNE shows Usain Bolt's famous world-record sprint of 2009?
With the right position and the right incidence of light, the structure shows the course of Usain Bolt's legendary 100m sprint at the Athletics World Championships in Berlin on 16 August 2009. That day Bolt set the current 100m world record of 9.58 seconds.
The five floors of the building symbolize five lanes of the sprint system. The oppositely curved slats represent five runners. The length of the light-coloured structure illustrates the current speed of each runner. A larger length stands for a higher speed.
At the end of the building you can see that all runners are close together shortly after the start and have relatively equal speeds. A few meters further you can see the distribution in the further course. Usain Bolt (floor 4) runs the highest speed and is already moving away from the field of runners.
The last structure, shortly before the upper part of the building separates from the lower part, shows the finish where Bolt wins by far at the highest speed.
